ISTE announces three new titles in The Flipped Learning Series: English Instruction, Math Instruction and Social Studies
Guidebooks from bestselling authors Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sams support teachers who are flipping their classrooms
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oct. 6, 2015 – As thousands of teachers around the country celebrate “Flipped Day,” the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) announced the publication of three new titles in The Flipped Learning Series. Co-authored by flipped learning pioneers Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sams, Flipped Learning for English Instruction, Flipped Learning for Math Instruction and Flipped Learning for Social Studies join Flipped Learning for Science Instruction in the series of guidebooks designed to support teachers as they infuse flipped learning and technology in specific subject areas.
In all three books, the flipped learning instructional model is introduced and then the authors offer practical guidance specific to the subject areas. Each professional learning resource offers practical guidance on lesson planning, what to do with class time and how the flipped model can work alongside learning through inquiry. They also explore instructional activities to foster student-driven learning specific to each subject area. For example, in Flipped Learning for Social Studies, one chapter delves into how teachers can maximize the additional class time made available by flipped learning to involve students in active learning through interactive social studies simulations. In Flipped Learning for English Instruction, the authors share strategies for teaching grammar and vocabulary in the flipped classroom, including how to use tech tools to flip grammar instruction. Flipped Learning for Math Instruction offers tips for integrating interactive math activities into the flipped classroom.
The new series builds on Bergmann and Sams’ bestselling ISTE book, Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Every Day.
A former classroom teacher and long-standing ISTE member, Bergmann is now chief learning officer at TurnAbout Learning. He received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching in 2002 and was named a semi-finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year in 2010. Bergmann serves on the advisory board of TED Education, and hosts “The Flip Side,” a radio show that tells the stories of flipped educators. Additionally, he is a founding board member and the treasurer of the Flipped Learning Network, the only not-for-profit organization run by and for flipped educators.
An educator since 2000, Sams, a long-standing ISTE member, is also a co-founder of the Flipped Learning Network. He is an adjunct instructor at Saint Vincent College, director of digital learning at the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh and an advisor to TED-Ed. Previously, he was a chemistry teacher at Woodland Park High School in Colorado. He was awarded the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching and served as co-chair of the Colorado State Science Standards Revision Committee.
