Instructional Leader Certification: January 31, 2025

The Instructional Leader Certification Program offers school and district leaders a practical, competency-based pathway to master five key areas: enhancing student learning, leveraging data, advancing curriculum, improving teaching quality, and driving innovation. With hands-on skill development and expert support from active practitioners, this program focuses on transforming instruction across your school or district—beyond theory or product-specific training.

Dr. Stefani Boutelier

Associate Professor of Education and Graduate Research Program Director

Stefani Boutelier, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Education at Aquinas College in Michigan. She is also the Graduate Research Program Director and teaches courses for pre-service and in-service teachers focused on instructional design, literacy, ed tech, and research methods. Her K-12 teaching was in Southern California prior to moving into teacher preparation.

Stefani is an ISTE Certified educator and trainer. She is also a Google for Education Certified Trainer, Apple Teacher, Microsoft Innovative Educator, and an Adobe Creative Educator. She is a MACUL Board Member and is a published author in academic and creative genres.

Dr. Sonn Sam is the proud son of genocide survivors. Through their unconditional love, guidance, and inspiration, Sonn has become an accomplished education leader whose work and commitment have impacted the lives of thousands of young people across the United States and the world. For over 21 years, he served as teacher/advisor, assistant principal, principal, Chief Innovation Officer, Regional Director, and National Director of Partnerships. His work advanced systemic transformation in education by moving from a compliance-driven system to a learner-driven system. A system that fundamentally recognizes that ALL young people are brilliant, and it is our collective responsibility to build systems and structures to cultivate that brilliance. From a policy to a practitioner level, he is actively building learner-driven systems and structures centered on every young person being known well, able to explore their interests, able to connect with local experts who share that interest, able to engage in meaningful learning that has impact and able to credit interest driven anywhere, anytime learning. Sonn is a graduate of the Univerity of Rhode Island (undergraduate), Cambridge College (master’s), and Johnson and Wales University (doctorate’s). As the National Director of Partnerships, Sonn partners with education leaders to build sustainable and transformative learner-driven systems pushing for more equitable outcomes. Beyond working to do his part to make this world a better place, Sonn enjoys time with his family, being physically active, reading/writing, and cooking.

Delrose Adkinson is an instructional technology coach turned assistant principal in Newport News, Virginia. An ISTE Certified Educator and a National Board Certified teacher, her vision is "Transformational leadership through service and authenticity. Her core values, faith, growth, and meaningful work sustains her vision.

Delrose’s passion lies in boosting student growth by cultivating technology-enchaned pedagogical expertise. Her leadership philosophy is grounded in a deep sense of purpose and commitment, fostering a culture of empowerment, equity, and excellence. While instructional technology can assist teachers in creating inspiring learning experiences for students, Delrose believes that learner-agentive teaching practices, powered by positive, productive relationships, are the key to student success.

This Instructional Leader Certification focuses on enhancing student learning experiences, leveraging data-driven decision-making, advancing curriculum development, improving teaching quality, and managing innovation and change. While the ISTE Educator Certification emphasizes the effective integration of technology in teaching practices, fostering digital citizenship, and ensuring that educators are equipped with strong pedagogy around best practices with technology to use digital tools to enhance learning experiences.

How much time commitment is required for the Instructional Leader Certification program? 

Participants can expect a robust, engaging learning experience.

  • The Instructional Leaders Certification is an approximate 50-hour commitment.

What happens if I don’t pass my Instructional Leaders Certification?

If you do not pass, you will need to transfer to another course within 12 months of your initial result. A transfer fee of $200 will apply. This allows you to continue working toward certification. You will not need to resubmit artifacts for any previously earned indicators. 

What happens if I need longer than the 7-month access to finish my Instructional Leader course requirements?


  • Participants enrolled in a public cohort may transfer to a future public cohort within the same calendar year.

  • Transfer Deadlines and Fees:

Transfers made within 30 days of the cohort ending: $200 transfer fee. 

Who reviews my Instructional Leaders portfolio of artifacts?

Your portfolio of artifacts is reviewed by a team of experts who are trained evaluators.

How will I become an ISTE+ASCD Certified Instructional Leader?

To earn the ISTE+ASCD Certified Instructional Leader credential, you must complete the following steps:

  • Access Competencies: During the course, you’ll gain access to all instructional leader competencies.
  • Review Requirements: Familiarize yourself with the requirements for certification and plan your submissions accordingly.
  • Submit Artifacts: You must submit 15 artifacts aligned to the indicators of the instructional leader competencies.
    • Artifacts can be submitted in any order.
    • You will have three submission windows within the 7-month course access:
      • First submission window: At the 3-month mark.
      • Second submission window: At the 5-month mark.
      • Final submission window: At the 7-month mark.
    • You are not required to use all three submission windows—submit at your own pace within the timeline.
  • Artifact Evaluation: Once submitted, your artifacts will be evaluated.
  • You must pass all 15 artifacts to earn the certification.

Successful submission and alignment of your artifacts will earn you the certification.

What support will I have in the Instructional Leaders Certification Program?

You will have access to two optional office hours per month, where you can:

  • Bring your artifacts for review.
  • Receive guidance and feedback to ensure your submissions align with the certification requirements.

These sessions are designed to help you stay on track and succeed.
